Desmond Finney Joined the English department FBC as Part-Time Lecturer in the 1996/97 Academic year as a Drama Lecturer. His responsibilities Included Preparing and Examining Drama/ Theatre Students in Years 1 to Year 3 in the basics of Theatre and Practical Drama skills. He has kept the tradition of the Drama Festival which was initiated in 1989 by his mentor Dr. Julius Spencer by sometimes resorting to self-funding it.
Desmond graduated in 1993 from the University of Sierra Leone with a Bachelor of Arts (B A) in English and Sociology and proceeded immediately to Hull, United Kingdom for an Arts Action Development and Training Programme organized by the Humberside Theatre in Education (TIE) and sponsored by the Yorkshire and Humberside Arts and the Hull City Council.
He recently completed a course and was awarded a certificate in Event and Festival Management by the British Council and the Federal Ministry of Tourism of Culture in Nigeria.
He has written, directed, produced, and acted in scores of Radio, Television, Live theatre, and Big Screen Projects not only in Sierra Leone but in Nigeria Ghana, and The Gambia. He is best known for his memorable acting in over 50 African Movies like Blood Diamonds, Diamond Wahala, Reflections, Botie, and more recently The Posh Girl Take me Home, Call the Sun, and Mindgame.
His students have gone on to excel in different walks of life from International Movie platforms to Politics where they credit him for instilling the confidence and performance bug In them through his Drama Practical class.
AWARDS
He has been nominated in several national and international awards for his acting and has in recent times won over Ten awards including AWOL National achievement awards, Best Artist Movie, AnSev Best actor, Black Continental Awards and SLAAM Awards in America, Best foreign actor in Banjul the Gambia and much more. He has also received lifetime achievement awards from the special movie awards in the Gambia and is slated to receive Lifetime achievement awards from The NEA National Achievement awards and FANEA Faces of the North Entertainment Awards.
