The National Film Awards is the first awards entity that is solely meant to celebrate the excellence of Sierra Leone filmmakers’ home and abroad. The award is owned by very young and enthusiastic Sierra Leonean movie lovers who are set to create a positive difference in the so much staggering Sierra Leone movie industry by ensuring filmmakers that put so much time, effort and money in the art get the needed recognition nationally.
The management of the awards entity started creating acquaintance with all the category of filmmakers across the country with a familiarization tour which covered the five regions– Western Area, North West, East, North and South, in Sierra Leone. Meetings were held with all the key unions across the said regions, and the main drive to the discuss was the aim of the NFA, what it stands for and how filmmakers could be part of it.
The familiarization tour was followed with the glamourous official launch of the National Film Awards which was done at the Tees Shopping Center, Wilkinson Road, Freetown. The event entailed a one of its kind red carpet welcoming and a cocktail, and it was graced by top-notch celebrities, filmmakers, community leaders, and government officials from across the country.
The founder, Idrissa Barry Jalloh clarified that the essence of the National Film Awards is to bring together filmmakers across the country, recognize and celebrate their hard work, excellence and contribute to the tourism industry. He went on to say the first edition will officially commence in 2021 but did not state the specific month and day, and the theme for the first edition is “Sierra Leone Rising” which portrays the National Film Awards as the first platform that caters for filmmakers only in every category since the advent of the Sierra Leone Film Industry in the 19th Century; and how a nation like Sierra Leone is on the rise in the movie world. Idrissa said that the first edition shall be having 25 categories
as a start, and they will be added as the event continues in the following years. The National Film Awards is owned by the Academy of Motion Pictures Ltd, and it is here to stay. He concluded.
